Want more? No problem.  Here’s a first hand interview with Jennica- the super cool lady behind it all:

How and when did Bye Bye Birdy come to be and where did the name come from?

Bye Bye Birdy’s first show was in March of 2011. I always wrote acoustic songs on the side from whatever full band I was in, but did not take it seriously until after I had my son, Aubin. When he was born I would always play and sing for him. He inspired me to keep writing music and doing what I love. The name is a metaphor of basically freeing a caged bird. Or freeing whatever is inside you. I think everyone should always do what they’re passionate about no matter how tough life gets. Being creative & expressing your inner most thoughts are so therapeutic. There is also the musical “bye bye birdie” which I did not intend to name the project after.

Where do you draw inspiration from when writing music?

I find inspiration in so many different ways. Obviously through my own hardships & life experiences, but I also tend to find myself being extra inspired by other people’s situations… I think stranger’s stories intrigue me so much, that I tend to put myself in their shoes and think “how would I feel if I were in their situation?” Plus not actually going through what they went through gives my imagination a wide open slate to feel & even grieve what they may have grieved.

Do any of you do any other kinds of art?

Not really. Music is my main thing. I do however, play in another band called The Scenery.

Do you ever get your own songs stuck in your head? (They’re sure stuck in ours!) If not, what song can you currently not help but hum?

haha! Yes definitely. I have one particular song called “grain of salt” that I will be recording super soon. It will be my first full band recording for Bye Bye Birdy. Otherwise… Rivers & Roads by The Head & The Heart has been stuck in my head for awhile now.

Where are you hoping to be in five years?

5 years! thats so far away! haha Honestly, my only hopes are to have a happy family. I play music because I love it & feel it so much, but I’m not doing it to make a ton of money or become crazy famous. I feel like once you set that as your goal… you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.  Its like anticipating the world’s best cupcake and then getting it… & having it taste like a hostess. The music industry is a rough industry to try and wrap your fingers around. I can only play the music  I play because I absolutely love it and feel it and believe in it… & if anything more comes of it, I will accept it with open arms… and with that being said… logically I should have a full record out by then & hopefully a small tour as well.

You  are obviously immensely talented when it comes to music, but do any of you have any hidden talents? (Breathing fire, lion tamer, mind reader, etc.)

Yes. I restore antique airplane engines……. totally not true but that would be SO awesome! I actually danced my whole life… and taught dance at various high schools here in Michigan. Its my second passion next to music… yet they go hand in hand. A dream of mine, has been to write a dance song and then choreograph a routine to it and see it all come together. Maybe on the next next record.??

Lastly, any words of wisdom you can share with other creatives?

Don’t try too hard. And don’t be too hard on yourself. Sometimes the best creations just occur when you let yourself completely free of any expectations anyone could possibly have of you… and you just…. let it out.
