DIY Post: Festive Backdrop

It’s the holiday season- There are a million celebrations happening- maybe you’re even hosting an event of your own? Here’s a simple, cheap and festive way to decorate and give a little extra whimsy to any event. This backdrop texture also works WONDERS for photos. We chose bright colors for this DIY for the ease of visual instruction, but we’ve previously used all white tissue paper and this same technique for occasions and the positive feedback hasn’t stopped yet!

Step 1: Fold 3 sheets of tissue paper in 1/2, long ways (crease at the top).

Step 2: Fold the tissue paper in 1/2  and then in 1/2 once again, and cut the left and right bottom corners off of your tissue paper to form a point at the bottom.

Step 3: Fringe the bottom of your tissue paper, about 1/2 way up.

Step 4: Unfold back to the form you made in Step 1

Step 5: Seperate the top layer from the back layer and stagger to make the appearance of 2 layers. Then crease to this form.

Step 6: Tape these sections to your wall or location of choice working your way from bottom to top. Make sure to tape on the top crease and from the crease inside as well. The interior tape holds the multiple sheets of tissue paper in place.

That’s it. Really. It’s that simple. Try it out, let us know how it works for you and if you’re super inspired, send us a photo!

Happy Handmade Holidays!

DIY Post: Beach Stone Necklace

One of my favorite pastimes in summer is talking walks along Lake Erie.  Whether with friends, family or on my own, I get wrapped up in the beauty of the water and the items it washes ashore.  From beach glass to special rocks, I’m always picking things up and taking them home with me.  The beach glass sits in a mason jar in my kitchen and the rocks often find themselves in my flower pots.

On a recent trip to Fairport Harbor with my family, I picked up these pretty stones and couldn’t wait to do something special with them.  Here is a little how to for displaying your pretty beach finds.

Supplies:
Jewelry Craft Pliers
Multi-use Wire Snips
Craft Wire
Premade Necklace Chain – try Etsy Supplies or your local craft store
Findings – Jump Rings
Pretty Stones
Cut an 8 inch piece of wire and make a small loop.

STEP ONE:
Twist about three times giving the loop a tail.  This will add strength and stability to the loop.

STEP TWO:
Determine which side of the stone you want to have in the front and place that wire loop in the back.

STEP THREE:
Wrap the wire around the stone as tight as possible, crossing the two tails over one another and adding a dab of super glue for extra security.  Once your stone is secure, snip any excess wire.

FINAL PRODUCT:
Add the beach stone charm to the necklace chain using a jump ring and Voila!  A pretty, and natural, necklace to wear all summer long

Special thanks to my friend Adam Taseff (www.twitter.com/arterxcreative) for taking these pretty photos!

xoxo, Shelley
